2 TODAY S GOSPEL: Matthew 24:27-36 "For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together. "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken; then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory; and he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away till all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only." The feast day marks the fourth-century discovery of the actual cross of the Crucifixion by Queen Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine. At the advanced age of 80, this pious Christian woman made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to identify places where Christ had walked, some 300 years earlier. There, after years of prayer and good works, Helena was witness to a miracle: at the foot of Golgotha the hill where Christ was crucified workers under her sponsorship unearthed three wooden crosses. But which one was the true Cross of Christ? In an ingenious solution, the workers brought the body of a recentlydeceased man to the site. Placing him on the first two crosses produced no result. But when he was placed on the third, the body stirred to life. This, Helena concluded, must be the True Cross still surging with the miraculous, life-giving power of Christ s Resurrection. The cross is a source of great pride for Armenians as a khachagir or "cross-bearing" nation. Armenians have borne Christ's cross with faith, hope and love. What was once an instrument of torture and death would become for Christians the symbol of salvation, and victory over death.

6 WOMEN S GUILD NEWS Moms and Manoogs This Fall, Moms and Manoogs has a lot of great outings planned including cider mills, parks and our 1 st annual Halloween party on Friday, October 28 th from 10:30-12:00 in the church nursery. Come meet us in costume for treats, games and crafts. We ve become very flexible on our meeting dates and times, but usually meet twice a month on M, W, or F. So if you want to make new friends big and small within the St. John s family, please join us for an outing or at our Halloween party. Donations of unused toiletries, beauty products, back packs, school supplies, underwear, socks, scarves and gloves, wash cloths, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Items may be dropped off at the church office or given to Women s Guild members to be brought to the November 2 meeting. The Women s Guild invites you to become a member. For details, call Linda Assarian, INSTALLATION SERVICE AND CELEBRATION FOR FATHER HRACH SARGSYAN AT CLEVELAND CHURCH Father Hrach Sargsyan, who served his clergy internship at St. John s, has been appointed pastor of the St. Gregory of Narek Armenian Church, Cleveland Ohio. On Friday, November 18, an Ecumenical Service for the Installation of a Pastor will take place at the St. Gregory Parish, followed by a reception. We announce this event for the many parishioners who remember Der Hrach and would like to attend. More details will be forthcoming as soon as we learn of them.
